BLOG TOUR - Surrender the Sky by Meradeth Houston (Guest Post & Giveaway)

Surrender the Sky by Meradeth Houston
Publication date: May 2nd 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
Gabby lives by two unbreakable rules: don’t expose her kind, the Sary, and don’t fall in love—too bad some rules are made to be broken.

When Gabby’s most difficult charge accidentally shoots her in front of a class full of students, the event exposes her carefully hidden identity. She shifts from looking like a normal teen to her secret Sary form, revealing her wings and the existence of her kind—immortals who try to keep people from committing suicide. Her incident attracts the attention of the next leader of the Sary, Jassen, who offers her an impossible bargain: she can keep her wings if she makes amends with those who know the truth. Things get more complicated when a rebel Sary, intent on exposing them to the world, starts interfering with Gabby’s work. And there’s no denying her attraction to Jassen, who is torn between his duties and his heart. With threats at every turn and her immortality on the line, Gabby has to find a way to save the Sary or surrender the sky forever.

How Surrender the Sky Came to Be

Hi! Thanks a million for hosting me today.

Surrender the Sky has been lurking in my brain, and in the bytes on my hard drives, for a very long time. It’s actually the first story I ever really wrote—long, long ago . It has gone through so many drafts, incarnations, and other shenanigans that it doesn’t even remotely resemble the story that it originally was, but that’s where it started out.

I remember being captivated by the idea of flying, and other-wordly kinds of beings, from a book I’d read. It was kind of a “eureka!” moment for me when I realized I could write about these kinds of things, rather than search endlessly for a book that dealt with them. So I did. And that’s where the Sary, and Gabby first came to light.

Gabby, like most of my characters, got her voice as soon as I started writing. It came first from a scene—the one that’s in the first chapter now, where Gabby finds herself in a bit of a predicament, showing her secret to a classroom full of students. Gabby took charge and took things from there. Really, a lot of my books end up like that, where I feel like I’m along for the ride, trying to put into words something that’s coming from the people/characters I’m writing about.

Now, even though I started this book ages ago, I also trunked it. Several times. But it’s always been a story I’ve gone back to. I love Gabby, and Jassen is all kinds of fun in his silent but strong way. I couldn’t leave it alone. And after writing several other books in the Sary Society series, I knew it was time to come back to Surrender and give it a go. I like to think I was really ready to write Gabby’s story this time around, and do it right, but who knows if that’s true. I could always find things I could change and tweak, but maybe that’s just the nature of being an author!

Anyhow, long story short, Surrender has been around for a while, but I’m really happy to see it out in the world now, and even more stoked that a lot of people are enjoying it! I hope you get a chance to visit with Gabby, Jassen, Bea, and even Nathan.

Meradeth’s never been a big fan of talking about herself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about her:

>She’s a Northern California girl. This generally means she talks too fast and use “like” a lot.
>When she’s not writing, she’s sequencing dead people’s DNA. For fun!
>She’s been writing since she was 11 years old. It’s her hobby, her passion, and she’s so happy to get to share her work!
>If she could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because she’s terrified of heights.
