Synopsis:
What if your destiny lay on the other side of death?
The annual Culling ceremony is a day every coming-of-age novice looks forward to within the Primeval Coven. It’s the start to being initiated into the Night Watchmen, humankind’s protectors, and it’s the long-awaited day when novices discover if they’re a Hunter or a Witch.
But this day is not a happy one for Faye Middleton. Not when she’s known her whole life that she’s a Defect and is about to face banishment in front of her fellow novices. She’s forced to attend the Culling with little hope for her future, but what she discovers about herself is far worse than she could’ve imagined. And far more dangerous.
Thrown into training and separated from her friends, Faye must learn to adjust. She struggles to find her place within the Coven, and with Jaxen Gramm, the darkly handsome and extremely unnerving man assigned to watch and protect her. Emotions run high, and when she discovers a deadly secret about him, her struggles deepen. As corruption within the Coven begins to unravel, Faye pieces together her role in saving the future of her people, and within Jaxen’s life…but will the truth save her, or be her undoing?

The first in a series, this was a fantastic read and I can so see myself getting addicted to this series!
Told from Faye's POV, we follow her on her journey from her believing she is going to be banished for being a Defect, to her discovering the shocking truth of what she really is. I loved Faye, she was such a great character. She was tough, feisty and independent. I loved how she stood up for herself and didn't let people walk all over her. Even though she was going through so much and I could totally understand if she just curled up into a ball and tried to forget everything, she didn't. She was a fighter and I really admired that about her.
Another character I really loved was Jaxon. Oh Jaxon *swoon*. I want one. He was so much more than what I thought he was going to be. I was expecting the typical bad boy persona - cocky, closed-off, jerkish behavior. While he did have these he was also so sweet, and got so nervous around Faye. He was just adorable! I loved that there was so much more to him than meets the eye. It was so refreshing. Him and Faye had great chemistry together. Nothing about them felt rushed or forced. Their relationship moved at the perfect pace. Yay for no insta-love!
They story itself was very fast paced and full of heart-pounding action. The romance didn't take away from everything else that was happening in the story. The author brought something different to a genre that seems over-done. There was originality that made me invested in the story and kept me up until the early hours of the morning. There was also lots of twists that had me even more hooked. Come 3am I literally had to pry my kindle out of my hands and force myself to go to sleep. While the plot was quite serious there was also lots of laughs to be had. Jaxon's brother Gavin was hilarious!
All in all this was a fabulous read. Non-stop action, and a butterflies-inducing romance, this book is a must read. The first book I have read from this author and it definitely won't be the last. Bring on book #2!
