Summary:
Penelope is a witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then, she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away.

When she’s finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the tests and get access to the information she needs to find "her" demon. To take back what was stolen.

Then she meets Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her secret—but he also has one of his own.

Suddenly, Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their own agenda…and they’re far too interested in her.

4/5

I was so excited when I was approved by the publishers on NetGalley to review this book. The blurb and cover immediately grabbed my attention, and the fact that JLA loved just sold me on it. And I'm glad to say that I enjoyed this book immensely.

Salt is the story of Penelope and her quest to get her magic back from the demon that killed her parents. I really enjoyed Penelope as a protagonist. She's very witty and has great determination. And I loved Carter. He was adorable. There is a lot of mystery behind him but he wasn't the typical moody bad boy type. Sure he was arrogant and overly confident but he still had really sweet moments. His and Pen's interactions were so fun and they had great chemistry. They were so snarky towards each other and I love that type of humor. One thing that did sort of bug me and so added to the reduced star rating is that I felt it was a little bit insta-love. Not overly in your face insta-love, but I still felt like the "I love yous" were a bit premature. I would have liked it to have been left until the second book but I still liked them together.

The story is full of action, with plenty of fight scenes to keep you entertained. Even though Pen has no magic she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. Although saying that, I did find myself wanting to shake some sense into her a couple times. She didn't really think some things through and you would think that she would be more prepared. I mean who leaves the house without salt when you know it's the one thing that will protect you? Come on girl, use your head. Along with all the action, there is plenty of mystery to keep you second guessing as to what is really going on. There were a few surprises and I really liked that. I love when a book has the ability to surprise me.

Overall this was an action packed adventure, filled with wonderful humor, a sweet romance, and numerous twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. The author has created a magical and creative world and I look forward to continuing on the adventure in book 2.
