Book Tour: The Guys Are Props Club by Ingrid Seymour

Title: The Guys Are Props Club
Author: Ingrid Seymour
Date of Publication: July 15, 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

During her senior year in high school, Maddie Burch promised herself not to ever fall for a cute guy – or any guy – again. Cute guys are players and not to be trusted, a fact she learned the hard way when her first boyfriend ran her heart through a paper shredder. Two years later, her promise is still intact, and she’s determined to make it through college without falling victim to another creep. She has her job, school and The Guys Are Props Club to keep her mind and hormones in check.

The club was founded by Jessica, Maddie’s best friend. It is a sisterhood of girls who have fallen prey to heartless jerks and who have vowed to turn the tables. Once a semester, Jessica requires members to “do onto others as they’ve done unto you.” Setting the example, Jessica’s next play is Sebastian Capello, a theater major with heartthrob looks and a flair for Latin dance, whose heart she plans to break the way hers was once broken.

What the friends don’t know is that Sebastian is different. Despite his perfect looks and popularity, he’s not a jerk. He doesn’t play games to get his way. Instead, he keeps it real and goes after what he wants with honest intentions. And what he wants is not a bombshell like Jessica, but a down-to-earth girl like Maddie – even if it causes a riff in the girl’s friendship. Even if it means getting Maddie to break her personal vow.

*** Due to language and sexual situations this book is recommended for ages 17 and older.

My Review

4/5

WARNING: Contains Spoilers

Gather a group of like-minded college girls in one room who have one sole focus : getting back at the male population, add in a slightly sadistic, very persuasive leader and this is what you get: The Guys Are Props Club or GAP for short.

First I want to say that even though I did not agree with what these girls were doing I was very intrigued by the premise. Because of the deception I thought that I would really dislike the main character, Maddie. I was wrong, I didn't necessarily love her because she was not standing up for what she believed in at the beginning but I didn't hate her either because she was more mature than I expected and she had morals. Her best friend and roommate, Jessica seemed to lack these qualities as well as having no shame whatsoever.

Next up, Sebastian, I must admit I may have subconsciously requested this book on that name alone, I love it. From the blurb I did not think that he would be the nice, kind-hearted and sometimes shy guy that I soon learned he was in the book. This kind of took away some of his appeal to be honest.

The only thing that I found to be a bit odd was Jessica's behaviour. It didn't seem to make sense. She claims that she acted out of jealousy, feeling that Sebastian was going to steal Maddie from her yet what she did just drove her friend away. Seems a bit strange to me.

The ending was a bit too convenient. I get that Sebastian is a nice guy but he was very forgiving, very quickly. It was rather sudden when it would have been a bit more believable a couple of pages before that part.
All in all I did like the book in spite of the strange behaviours of the characters and not so noble intentions of the Club.

  1. This sounds like an interesting read. I've read and watched movies with this sort of plot to it and have always seemed to enjoy them.
