BLOG TOUR - Love and Relativity by Rachael Wade (Excerpt & Giveaway)

Love and Relativity by Rachael Wade
Publication date: December 12th 2012
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:
Love, life, and happily ever after? It’s all relative.

Marine biology student Emma Pierce lives in paradise—geographically speaking, anyway. Stranded on Sanibel Island, Florida, she works at a nursing home by day and spends her nights dodging the island’s infamous bad boy, Jackson Taylor, at her favorite karaoke bar. Trying to heal from the loss of her sister and a failed relationship she rerouted her life for, she’s ready to graduate and finally leave Florida behind.

When a run-in with Jackson and his rowdy crew goes sour at the bar one night, sparks fly and irreversible damage is done. It’s no secret that Jackson loves to get underneath her skin, but this time he’s gone too far. Now all he wants is to earn her forgiveness before she’s gone for good, but their ideas of closure—and the future—are enough to keep them worlds apart.

Jackson’s lap was warm. He smelled like coconut, his skin sticky from sunscreen. I breathed him in and opened my eyes, my gaze rolling upward, travelling over his neck and cheekbones until they landed on his blue irises. They stared down at me, soft and full of some unnamed emotion.
            I looked away.
“Can I make you some soup?” he asked, standing and lifting me with him, carrying me over to the recliner. He draped me across it and then covered me with a blanket, brushing the hair from my eyes.
            No answer.
            “Okay, how about pumpkin pie?”
That earned him a small smile. It hurt, but seeing him return the effort with his own grin was so worth it.
“Soup is fine, thank you. Aren’t I interrupting your Friday night fun? Don’t you have a fight to pick or a girl to chase around or something?”
He walked to the stove and opened a can of Chicken Noodle. “There are six other nights of the week I can fight, and plenty of girls to chase around after you leave.”
            “If you say so.”
“Just relax. Sleep if you want. I won’t let anything wake you.” Pouring the soup in the pot, he reached over to the counter to snatch my cell phone and turned it off, then fished his own from his pocket and turned it off, too.
The word ‘sleep’ was a hypnotic balm, immediately sending me into a hazy state until I drifted on the recliner and the world went away. I woke on my own at what felt like an hour later, my eyes scanning the room for Jackson and the soup he’d promised.
“I’m right here,” he said softly. My gaze fell on him and I swallowed hard, slowly shifting to sit up in the recliner. He was shirtless and soaked with sweat, lounging at the tiny kitchen table, tinkering with some kind of fishing pole and a tool box. “I went for a run when you passed out. I kept the soup warm on the stove.” Setting the pole down, he wandered over to the stove and poured me some, carrying it over with a spoon and napkin. Every muscle on his smooth, tanned abdomen rippled as he leaned over to hand the bowl to me, his scarred, calloused hands nearly swallowing the small blue dish.
            “Thanks.” I set it down.
He sat next to me and eyed the bowl, draping an arm over the back of the sofa. He gulped at his beer. “Not hungry anymore?”
“There’s something else you can do for me that will make me feel better.”
His eyes drifted to mine. I inched forward and leaned into the crook of his arm, bringing my hand to his chest. His sweat chilled my skin and sent a shudder through me.
My lips found his throat and then the curve of his neck. The muscles there jumped against my lips, and his free hand found mine on his chest, where his heart was pounding wildly.
“Emma,” his voice came out hoarse, “I don’t think—oh, fuck,” it turned into a whisper when my fingers travelled down to his lap, rubbing and stroking in a slow, sensual attack. I stopped rubbing and slipped over his knees to straddle him, my fingers finding his thick hair as I bent down to capture his mouth with mine.
“Please,” I whispered against his tongue, rolling my hips against him. “I need you, Jackson.”
Strong, willing hands found my breasts, and then the buttons on my dress. He deftly unhooked each one, intensifying his kiss and plunging his tongue into the back of my throat, stealing every ounce of space until I felt nothing but his warm, wet need. He reached the last button and slid the top of the dress down, pulling back to gaze at me. “You sure you want this?”
            “Yes. Don’t you?”
“Hell, yes, I want it.” His hands followed the curves of my hips and rested firmly on my ass. “But once I start, I won’t stop until I’m buried in you. So tell me you’re sure, because—”
“Just make me feel good, Jack.” I shoved my mouth on his again, and he hummed with want, standing to lift and lay me down on the couch. He hovered over me, and my gaze danced across his neck, down to his stomach and chiseled waistline. Every part of him took control—his hands, his arms, and his voice.
“Damn,” his fingers trailed up my inner thigh, slipping beneath the skirt of my dress. He started massaging it, rubbing in small circles. “You’re trembling, Emma.” His knuckles grazed the edge of my thong. “And you’re so wet. Oh, I’m gonna make you feel real good, baby. You’ll see. Just relax.” He dipped his head down and grazed his tongue over the swell of my breasts, hooking a finger along my panty line, slowly running it back and forth, releasing a pleased groan when I shivered under his touch. I squirmed beneath him, lifting and tilting my hips, then reached for his jeans button. He snatched my wrists and pushed my arms above my head, pinning them against the pillow, returning straight to my breasts to work his tongue and teeth over them, teasing and tugging through the bra’s material.
I moaned and stretched out, arching my back off the couch, my fingers finding something beneath the pillow above my head. An underwire. Soft cups. Straps. I pulled it from beneath the pillow and my eyes rolled upward, landing on a red, lacy bra. Pushing up on Jackson’s chest, I struggled to lean up on my elbows and scurried backward on the sofa, pulling myself up and out of the cage his body had created over mine.
“Um, let’s just forget it. I should get home.”
Jackson rolled up on his knees, dazed and hard as a rock. “What? But—” His eyes fell on the bra. “Shit. Emma, wait,” he jumped up, watching me straighten my dress and slip my shoes on. “We don’t have to do this. We can just hang out. You can sleep some more or I can cook something else if you’re hungry. Don’t go.”
“Thanks, but I really should leave. I haven’t seen my mom since the funeral.”
            “Shit, this is weird...”
I gave him an awkward smile, letting him know I wasn’t upset. But I still moved toward the front door. I couldn’t be another number in Jackson’s sea of faces...or red bras. And right now, he was my safe haven. A bubble I could enter whenever I felt the need, and could exit without ever being detected by the outside world. A place I could rest my head and exchange thoughts without saying a word. Because Jackson knew. Only he knew what I needed and why I needed it. No use ruining a good thing.
So I left and didn’t look back.

INTERVIEW:

What books did you love growing up?
Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden and the Hardy Boys of course; Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, The Lord of the Rings Series.

Who is your favorite author?
It’s a tie- Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Marion Zimmer Bradley

What book genre of books do you adore?
Paranormal, fantasy and horror but I read everything – as long as the book holds my attention for the first ten pages I’ll read it.

How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?
It depends on where I am and what I have available. If I’m caught out its pen and notebook that I always have in my handbag. Mostly its my PC during the day, and my iPad at night if I’m writing in bed. If I do get away for the weekend or am away from the house for a few days it’s the laptop.

How often do you write? And when do you write?
I try to write every day. I think creativity in writing is like a muscle and if you stop using it it tends to get lazy. I try to do 3k a day and sometimes when I do want to push I do 5k a day. It’s a rush and can sometimes get crazy if I have edits happening at the same time but I love it more so because I hate the feeling when I can barely write 500 words in a day. Then I feel a little useless because I know I can do more.
I usually write first thing in the morning until lunchtime and sometimes I may come back to write a little more late at night when the household is asleep.

Do you find the time to read?
As a writer you must find time to read. I think reading is inspiration and most writers need the creative input of reading to boost their own creativity. At least it works that way for me. I find I’m most prolific in terms of plotting and writing when I make the time to read.

What inspires you to write and why?
Everything inspires me, especially people and culture. I’ve always been fascinated with the way the mind works so that’s something that I question a lot when I’m working on a project.

What genre are you most comfortable writing?
Definitely paranormal/fantasy. I love mythology and fables. I love the mystery of the possibility of the impossible J

Who designed the cover?
My cover artist Eduardo Priego

Will you write others in this same genre?
Yes, definitely. I love writing YA and I especially love mythology. I already have a few stories to look at in terms of what’s next on my project list

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully still writing and still loving it as much as I do now.

What contributes to making a writer successful?
If you apply yourself, set your goals, write those books and don’t be afraid of hard work success is waiting for you. And working at you craft is so very important. Writers are learning all the time, be open to learning new ways, new styles, new tricks. If you are happy to continue learning and being a better writer then you are on your way. It’s just a matter of working hard and writing well.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
A glass of wine and a good book at the end of the day, or dinner and a movie with DH to make it more special

Do you have any special ways of handling/creating your world building?
I don't really. It depends on the book. For some I've done mind-maps like for the DarkWorld I sketched a map out of the different parts or levels of the world and where the creatures and characters, what their powers were etc. But it's mostly just how I feel the flow. For the Valkyrie and the Kali series, the world building was very dependent on the mythology I drew from which was good and bad in its own way- easier but slightly restrictive

What is the best thing about being a YA writer?
I'd have to say I don't see myself as only a YA author. I've written NA (Skin Deep, and Seals of Hades – still to be published), contemporary, horror, epic fantasy and psychological horror (all still to be published) and YA (Valkyrie and Kali series) so I will delve where the Muse takes me. That's probably the funnest thing for me- the ability to mess around in fantasy fiction and nobody can say you can or can't do that!
What is the worst thing about being a YA writer?
The worst thing I can see is there's so much to write, so many ideas and characters to get into manuscripts that it's sometimes hard to choose which one to get on to next!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

Author: Airicka Phoenix
Publisher: Fire & Ash Publishing
Release date: October 30, 2013
Genres: Young Adult, Horror, Romance
Warnings: Contains language and sexual content. 17+
Formats: e-book, paperback

Synopsis:
October 31, 1983, seventeen year old Johnny Baits vanishes without a trace, leaving the slumbering town of Chipawaha Creek, British Columbia reeling with his mysterious disappearance. Twenty-nine years later, The French family moves into his home, never realizing they're not alone in the house.

For seventeen year old Roseanna French moving to a strange new town is a problem she can handle. But even she's not prepared for the evil that has been sitting dormant for years... waiting. When seemingly harmless noises and creeping shadows at night leads to the murder of the people closest to her, Ana has to find a way to stop the evil before it can consume her completely and she can no longer wash the blood from her hands.

Rafael Ramirez is battling his own demons. Unlike Ana's, his has been haunting him for years. But running isn't an option. He has a mother, a brother and a sister looking to him to keep them safe. He doesn’t have time for pretty girls with issues, even if the sight of her makes him hope for things a guy like him doesn’t deserve. But when Ana asks Rafe for help, what can he do except give it? But what happens when the evil comes after his family? Can they stop it before it's too late or will it claim them the way it had claimed Johnny?

EXCERPT:
“Where is he?” he growled, doing a circle. “Where is he?”
“I … I think he’s gone,” Ana croaked, fighting not to give into the fainting sensation beckoning her to sway into its arms.
Rafe hurried over to her and took her hand. “Come on!”
She let herself be dragged up the path to the house, positive she would never have made it there on her own.
On the porch, he stopped and faced to her, his eyes intense. “Get inside and lock the door.”
Ana wanted to laugh. If she could’ve stopped shivering, stopped her teeth from chattering, her heart from going crazy in her chest, she would have reminded him that a closed door didn’t apply to ghosts. That locked or not, it wouldn’t stop that thing from getting inside. But there was something else, another reason that going inside wouldn’t help.
“He’s in there,” she told him, tears suddenly burning her eyes. Her bottom lip trembled.
“What?” He yanked her away from the open door and thrust her behind him. “Where?”
She sniffled, wanting so desperately to just bury her face into the planes of his back and cry. “In my room,” she whispered, absolutely certain of this now. “He’s inside my walls.”
It no longer mattered if he thought her insane. Her problems were so much bigger, so much more frightening. Plus, was she crazy if he’d seen it too? If he’d fought it? Was she still insane?
Rafe didn’t look disbelieving. He looked horrified and angry. His eyes widened, darting between her and the door. “What was that thing, Ana?”
“I don’t know!” she cried, no longer able to stop the flood of tears that washed down her face, mixing with the pond water. “I don’t know! I don’t know! I thought I was crazy. I thought … I’m not crazy! You saw him. You saw him, didn’t you? I’m not—”
She was suddenly in his arms, held so tight it was almost impossible to breathe. But it wasn’t close enough.
“Shh,” he whispered into her temple. “You’re not crazy. I saw him, too.”

EXCERPT:

"Is this the boat to Europe, France?"
Honestly, I tried to stop myself from asking the question, I truly did. In front of me, the porter guy looks at me as if I'm a thirteen (almost fourteen!)-year-old idiot. Beside me, dear old Dad looks at me as if I'm delusional (that's because a lot of the time he actually thinks I am—he's even had me tested to make sure I'm not). And he's about to open his mouth to start in on me (again . . . sigh) when, behind me, I hear it—someone laughs. Right on cue.
I swing around quickly, my head zipping from side to side, trying to see who it is, but it's practically impossible in this traffic jam of a crowd, especially when you're as short as I am and your dad won't let you wear a kitten heel, let alone rhinestones in the daytime. I bet Marilyn Monroe's mother never said a thing about Marilyn wearing rhinestones in the daytime. Then again, Marilyn Monroe's mother let her get married at sixteen and spent a great deal of time in a mental institution, so that's probably not saying very much. I'm just about to give up on the searching thing when the crowd parts and someone dressed entirely in red, going out/in/out (in all the right places) and hips swaying, passes me by with a wink and a lift of one perfectly arched eyebrow.
"Honey," she says, in the kind of voice that makes everyone turn and look at her. "France is in Europe."
Oh. My. God.
It's one of those moments when you just know you'll think up a zillion and two perfect things to say later, but instead you stand there looking like you've recently had a lobotomy. Especially when I realize that the someone is actually a Someone and that the woman now heading up the escalator to the biggest ship I've ever seen in my life is, in fact, Holly Isles.
Yes, the Holly Isles.
Actress. Goddess. Star of stage, screen and various tabloid magazines that you skim as fast as you can at the supermarket checkout because your dad will never let you buy them, Holly Isles.
Someone whistles. And this time, I don't need to look around. This time, I know for sure it's not for me. (Laughing, sure. Whistling? I am sincerely doubting it . . .) And because I don't turn around, I don't move for the guy. The one who smacks into my shoulder and says, "Excuse me. I need to get to my aunt."
I follow his gaze directly up the escalator to Holly. His aunt? Holly is his aunt? Well, la de da. I go to give him my best "Get your filthy mitts off me, don't mess with the outfit and don't go anywhere near the hair, buster" look when my mouth drops even further. Hello, sailor! Cute boy ahoy! This guy is definitely related to Holly in a big way.
"Ah . . ." my dad exhales, the lecture he'd been working on giving me obviously forgotten. Funny, but he's got the same kind of lobotomy look as me. And he's staring straight at Holly.
It takes me a moment to get over the shock. When I finally do, my eyes move back from my dad to Holly's form as she goes up, up, up (and I'm not alone, I think everyone on the dock is watching Holly go up, up, up). Slowly, I shake my head from side to side. I can't believe it. I can't believe Holly Isles just said that to me. And it wasn't exactly the line from the movie I was thinking about, but then again, neither was mine. And I could probably go on watching her forever, my mouth hanging open (okay, so I only check out her nephew a few more times), except that Holly's now out of sight and my dad has obviously returned to his old lecturing form.
"Nessa Joanne Mulholland."
"Mmmm."
"NESSA JOANNE MULHOLLAND!"
"Huh?" I finally look up, only to see him looking down at something. At my chest. Ugh. Gross. What is he doing? He'd better not be doing any research on me. But then I look down too.
Oops. The tissues are escaping again.
I surreptitiously stuff them down my black-with-leopard-skin-trim top with one hand. "I've got a cold, okay?" I mutter. Geez. So much for Marilyn's mother. I bet she never had to put up with this kind of harassment from her father, either. Except that no-one was ever quite sure exactly who he was. And, of course, Marilyn didn't need to stuff, either, did she?
I sigh my second sigh of the morning. Life. It's just so . . . unmovielike.
